Healthy relationships and personal boundaries are skills — and like any skill, they can be taught clearly and with evidence.
Foundations for Real-World Sex Ed is a science-based curriculum designed to help teens understand consent, communication, and human development through practical lessons and real-world scenarios.
A Science-Based, Inclusive Curriculum for Teens
Healthy relationships and personal boundaries are skills and like any skill, they can be taught clearly, calmly, and with evidence.
Foundations for Real-World Sex Ed is a modular curriculum designed to help teens understand consent, communication, relationships, and human development through a science-based and developmentally appropriate approach.
Built by a high school science teacher and parent, this curriculum focuses on practical communication skills, real-world scenarios, and accurate biological information.
Rather than relying on fear, shame, or silence, the lessons help students develop the language and confidence needed to navigate all relationships safely and respectfully.
The goal is not to tell students what to think- it’s to give them the tools to think clearly, communicate boundaries, and understand the science of human development.
What Makes This Curriculum Different
Science-based
All lessons are grounded in current research in adolescent development, communication, and human biology. Students learn how bodies develop, how attraction and relationships form, and how communication shapes safe decision-making.
Practical communication skills
Students practice real-world language for navigating peer pressure, dating, boundaries, and digital interactions.
Inclusive and respectful
The curriculum recognizes that teens come from diverse families, experiences and perspectives. Lessons focus on respect, consent, and healthy communication across different identities and relationship contexts.
Built for real classrooms
Activities are structured for discussion, reflection, and skill-building, not just lectures! Materials are designed for teachers, parents, and facilitators who want clear guidance and ready-to-use resources.
What Students Learn
Through the eight-module curriculum, students explore:
• The science of human growth and development
• Consent as communication, not just a rule
• Boundaries and personal agency
• Healthy vs unhealthy relationship patterns
• Peer pressure and social dynamics
• Digital consent and online safety
• STI awareness and prevention
• How to recognize and respond to red flags
Each module builds practical skills students can apply immediately in their everyday lives.
Who This Curriculum Is For
This curriculum was designed for:
• High school classrooms
• homeschool learning environments
• youth groups and community programs
• parents who want structured conversations about relationships
The lessons are most appropriate for ages 14–18, but materials can be adapted for younger or older students.
Created by an Educator
This curriculum was developed by Cat Diaz, a high school science teacher and parent of three.
After years of working directly with teenagers, she saw the gap between the State standards and the needs of her community and what students are told about relationships and what they actually experience.
Catalysts Commons was created to provide clear, science-based tools that help young people build communication skills, respect boundaries, and navigate relationships with confidence.
Built for Conversation
Real learning happens through conversation.
Foundations for Real-World Sex Ed is designed to help educators and families create spaces where students can communicate, ask questions, think critically, and develop the skills that support healthy relationships throughout their lives.
